Backloaded Schedule Will Keep Playoff-Hungry Teams on Edge

Chicago BearsAt 9-3 and atop the NFC North with four games to go, the Bears should be confident of making the playoffs.

But this year, the NFL's backloaded schedule makes things a lot dicier than normal for leaders, especially in the NFC, where seven teams are 7-5 or better, and two won't make the postseason because one spot is reserved for the winner of the West, which probably will be 8-8 at best.

Chicago's schedule makes the Bears' situation especially tenuous: Depending on the situations of their opponents (like the name and health of Minnesota's quarterback), they could be underdogs in all four of their remaining games -- the Patriots and Jets at home; at Minnesota and Green Bay. And winning those two road division games will be more important than beating two AFC teams.

That's not to single out Chicago. Aside from Atlanta, 10-2 with two games left against 1-11 Carolina, the other top teams still have big games to win thanks to the league's conscious decision to play as many division games as it can late in the season.
