IBM's Watson Supercomputer Competes Against All-Stars on Jeopardy, Ties for First (The One)

ibm watson supercomputer vs ken jennings on jeopardyThe people at IBM have been making straightforward business computers for a while now, so in 2007 they set out on a different kind of project: to create a computer that could process natural language and connect it to data. This would be a supercomputer that understood wordplay and the culture behind language in order to come up with an answer that makes the most sense, not just a straight-up data recepticle.

Now, in 2011, Watson is the product of that project, and it's competing on Jeopardy against all-stars Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter for three nights this week.

Last night was round one, and it looked like Watson was going to win for a while there. At one point, Watson's score was $5,000 higher than the two human contestants', but the episode ended in a tie between Watson and Rutter, so there's still a little hope for the human brain yet.
