When I was a growing up in the 1990’s, my favorite wrestling program was WCW Monday Nitro. I loved the excitement of seeing main eventers like Sting, Macho Man, Ric Flair, and Hulk Hogan. However, one of the most exciting parts of the program was the undercard.
At that time World Championship Wrestling was showcasing cruiserweight talent like Chris Jericho, Rey Mysterio, Ultimo Dragon, Dean Malenko, Prince Iaukea, Eddie Guerrero, and Billy Kidman. These competitors lit up the screen with high-flying and technical maneuvers.
The best part is, the WWE has enough depth in their roster to excite the WWE Universe in the same way now. The company just needs a means in which to present the division.
The cruiserweight title was a very important part of WCW and WWE’s history and could be a gateway to a new generation of talent. The title and division helped escalate superstars like Mysterio, Guerrero, and Jericho into main event status.
Without the cruiserweight title, we would have never had the classic 1,004 holds promo by Chris Jericho (Armbar!). The WWE now has a chance to use a cruiserweight division to do the same thing for some of their younger stars.
WCW’s cruiserweight division’s success was based on the plethora of talent that they had for their undercard. The WWE currently has enough talent to carry a successful lightweight division today. It is obvious that guys like Tyson Kidd and Yoshi Tatsu can put on exciting and original exhibition matches.
What is lacking in their career is creative direction.
A cruiserweight title would allow the WWE to open up new storylines for these younger talents, as well as showcase their in-ring skills on cable television.
The WWE has enough top lightweight wrestlers to legitimize the title. Superstars like Cody Rhodes, Sin Cara, Evan Bourne, and Rey Mysterio could compete in a bracket style tournament to reintroduce the title.
After a champion is crowned, guys like Zack Ryder, Tyson Kidd, Yoshi Tatsu, Trent Barreta, Heath Slater, Justin Gabriel, and Daniel Bryan could fill in the division.
Reintroducing the cruiserweight title would allow for exciting, fast-paced matches that all fans would enjoy. The title would also allow WWE to introduce new match types that could display the unique talents of the more agile Superstars.
As a fan, I can’t think of anything more exciting than an Elimination Chamber match full of young cruiserweights.
Wrestling fans are some of the most devoted sports enthusiasts in the world today. However, no fan wants to see their favorite product become stale and predictable.
The WWE is always trying to come up with new and innovative ideas to keep their fans interested. The cruiserweight title would definitely bring a breath of fresh air into the WWE universe.
It is time for young fan favorites like Evan Bourne, Zack Ryder, and Yoshi Tatsu to be given a creative direction. We as wrestling fans feed off of exciting matches and storylines, and the WWE needs to take advantage of the superstars who can deliver that in-ring magic.
