After Wanderlei Silva's knockout loss to Chris Leben at UFC 132, UFC President Dana White has made it clear that he wants the Brazilian to call it a career and retire from mixed martial arts. The legendary fighter has had a successful career; however, he has not fared too well since being acquired by the UFC in 2007, going 2-4 inside the Octagon.
But fellow Brazilian Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira recently defended the former Pride FC middleweight champion and said White shouldn't not decide the fighter's fate.
“I think he was unfortunate with his comments. They're idols of the sport, he’s not a God who decides on everyone's career,” Nogueira told R7 Esportes.com, courtesy of FightersOnly.co.uk.
Nogueira, who also has had to face the possibility of retirement, praised Silva for his career accomplishments, as well as Tito Ortiz. Ortiz picked up a victory over Ryan Bader that same night after going 0-4-1 in his last six fights. It was Ortiz's first win since 2006. Nogueira said fighters like Silva and Ortiz might not be the same anymore, but they still are competitive.
“I loved the fact that Tito Ortiz won his last fight. You see that these people were not champions for nothing. Ortiz, Wanderlei and Fedor were top fighters for a reason," he said.
Nogueira will step back into the Octagon against Brendan Schaub at UFC 134. This will be his first fight since February 2010 after suffering a knockout loss to Cain Velasquez at UFC 110.
