Christian Heyward: How Does He Help USC's Defense?

Christian Heyward, one of the nation's top defensive tackles, has committed to play for USC next season.

The Trojans beat out Oregon and local competition from San Diego State to get the talented big man, and it was far from a sure thing leading up to signing day.

In fact, coming in, many analysts predicted Heyward would be heading to the Ducks, but it would seem that Lane Kiffin managed to snag him, after all.

But, how will the hefty interior lineman help the Trojans defense?

Heyward's size and strength will be extremely beneficial to a USC defense that struggled against both the pass and the run last season. Heyward is capable of shutting down the interior, and getting into the backfield to disrupt the passing game.

While Heyward isn't an elite prospect, the defensive tackle is one of the year's best at his position and when coupled with the rest of USC's recruits, helps give the Trojans quite the recruiting class.
