2011 Preakness Stakes Field: Animal Kingdom Trainer Talks Triple Crown

2011 Preakness Stakes Field and Animal Kingdom Trainer Talks Triple Crown

After winning the 137th running of the Kentucky Derby, Animal Kingdom looks to take the second leg of the Triple Crown at the 13 6th Preakness Stakes Saturday.

Animal Kingdom was the 20-1 underdog going into the Kentucky Derby, but now will be the favorite going into this week?s Preakness Stakes.

Even with all of the hype, Animal Kingdom?s trainer is trying to keep things as normal as possible when it comes to race routines.

Animal Kingdom trainer Graham Motion told NPR:

We gave him a pretty strong workout the week before the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, which he handled very well. So that was pretty much what gave us confidence to go on to the derby. We were fortunate to have a very good trip on derby day. And that's - it's not often that you can say that in that race, which can be a very roughly run race. So things went very smoothly for us. The horse has done well. You know, it's very unusual these days to run a horse back in two weeks off of a performance like that. But that's what we're going to try and do with Animal Kingdom in the Preakness, and he seems to be handling everything well so far.

While many didn?t see it coming at Churchill Downs, everyone will be looking for Animal Kingdom and the pressure will as high as it?s ever been for both horse and trainer.

I think Animal Kingdom will have too much pressure on him and not perform well. It seems like a long shot that there will be a favorite, but this field is as wide open as any I have ever seen.
