According to the Boston Globe, after being awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom this past February by President Barack Obama, Bill Russell will now be honored with a statue in Boston as well.
The Globe also made mention of the words of Obama regarding the matter.
“I hope that one day in the streets of Boston, children will look up at a statue built not only to Bill Russell the player, but Bill Russell the man,’’ Obama said.
An 11-time champion with the Boston Celtics, Russell is arguably one of the better centers in NBA history. The mark of 11 NBA championships is the most by any player in the history of the game.
His ability to rebound the basketball and block shots was unmatched by most in his era. Russell's playoff stat line of 16.2 points per game and 24.9 rebounds are numbers that what most would consider unheard of.
In his 13-year career with the Celtics as a player, Russell managed to win five MVP awards, was an 11-time All-NBA team recipient. Russell was also the coach of the Boston Celtics from 1966-1969, which made Russell the first player in the history of professional sports to coach a team.
In the city of Boston, as well as across the nation, Russell has been seen as one of the better people to play the game of basketball. His statistics were impressive with the Boston Celtics, along his winning ways and championship demeanor. Russell's compassion for life off the court as well as his skills on the court have now been honored with a statue in the city of Boston.
A Hall of Famer, a basketball legend and a role model to many, Bill Russell is will now receive an honor which he deserves.
The location of the statue to be built has yet to be chosen.
