The Packers Have Several Great Options Despite Picking Last In First Round
The Green Bay Packers have the worst spot in the draft, but they got it by winning a Super Bowl, so you will not see anyone associated with the Packers complaining.
Their draft position actually is somewhat advantageous because they do not have any glaring holes that demand they try to trade up and get a player who may not be available at the end of the first round.
The Packers draft needs consist mainly of adding depth. You typically do not add depth with a first round pick, but the Packers are the perfect example of what years of good drafting does.
The Packers could go with a wide receiver, a corner, or an offensive lineman with their first pick. All three options are not bad ones given the talent and what most likely still will be on the board at the 32nd pick.
ESPN's Mel Kiper picked OLB Brooks Read in his latest mock draft.
"At about 260 pounds, Reed is a productive player who profiles well as a rushing 3-4 outside linebacker who could help take some pressure off Clay Matthews in Dom Capers' system," said Kiper. A smart player with above-average quickness, he's a sleeper in this class, as a player who can get after the passer, but also shows instincts as a guy who can drop into coverage."
Walterfootball.com, one of the more entertaining Mock Draft Web sites, mocked Jonathan Baldwin to the Packers.
"One thing Ted Thompson will be looking for is a receiver," writes Walt. "Donald Driver doesn't have much left in the tank, while James Jones is a free agent. Thompson has been trying to get a talented big wideout for a long time, and after a great Combine, Jon Baldwin is one of the top players available."
I mocked Cameron Heyward to the Packers in my last mock draft. I believe in some of the things Kiper wrote, and you can not have enough depth with your pass rushing unit in the modern NFL.
