MLS Commissioner Don Garber: Soccer's Steward Sits Down With FanHouse

mls garberNEW YORK -- Wednesday was a good day to be at Major League Soccer headquarters.

The league unveiled its 2011 playoff format, which will include 10 clubs rather than eight for the first time. It was an eagerly awaited announcement that, like a lot of what's handed down from the midtown Manhattan office, generated plenty of conflicting opinions.

At the focal point of all those decisions and subsequent conversations is Don Garber (above, right), the 53-year-old New York City native now entering his 12th full season as MLS commissioner.

He came to soccer late in life, but one could argue that he's had more influence on the fate of the global game in its final frontier than any other American. And as MLS continues to grow, with 18 teams planning to play this year and a 19th coming aboard in 2012, there are no signs his influence is on the wane.

On Wednesday afternoon, after 22 months covering soccer for FanHouse, I had the opportunity to spend about an hour in Garber's office. We examined the day's big news (and a favorite subject of ours), of course, but also looked back to the failed 2022 World Cup bid and discussed David Beckham, branding, ESPN, the challenges of creating a soccer nation and how much power the commissioner really has, among other things.

Thanks to MLS Executive VP Dan Courtemanche and Director of Communications Will Kuhns for setting up the interview, and thanks to our readers for supporting FanHouse's soccer coverage over the past two years.

And now, the Q&A:

New NASL Holds Fast to Ambitious Second Division Vision

nasl mlsThe North American Soccer League is undaunted.

On Tuesday, the new eight-team circuit unveiled its 2011 schedule, with games set to begin April 9. On Wednesday, an expansion club set to enter the league in 2012, the San Antonio Scorpions, announced its partnership with Nike.

It's full steam ahead for the NASL, even though the road ahead may be blocked. Last week, the U.S. Soccer Federation withdrew its provisional approval of the new league's second division status. Without that sanctioning, there will be no 2011 season and no second division soccer in the United States.

Conversations with sources connected to the decision indicated that the federation was troubled by either the financial health of NASL backer Traffic Sports, by a delay in the posting of the $750,000 annual performance bond by one or more clubs, or perhaps both.

PS22 Sings 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' at The Academy Awards (The One)

ps22 chorus sings somewhere over the rainbow at oscars academy awardsThe Oscars definitely tried to keep it young last night by having hOtTiEs Anne Hathaway and James Franco host and autotuning the movies, but the most successful part of their campaign to be cool was at the end of the show when they had the kids from the PS22 Chorus come out on stage and sing 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow'.

The kids have been a big deal on the internet for a couple of years now, so they're no strangers to the spotlight, but there was still something special about seeing all of their excited faces serenading a room full of celebrities, and it warmed my chilly heart.

Jody Gerut Leaves Mariners Camp, Baseball, Citing Loss of Passion

Jody GerutPEORIA, Ariz. -- Outfielder Jody Gerut, who came up with the Indians in 2003 and played with five different Major League teams, retired in the camp of a sixth Sunday.

Gerut, who was given a 50-50 chance to make the opening day roster of the Seattle Mariners at age 33, said that his energy to play the game as well as he could was gone.

"I can no longer in good conscience play the game in a manner that reflects the positive example for the younger generation of baseball players,'' Gerut said. "Physically, I'm fine. But mentally my reasons for wanting to be in uniform have become so thing and narrow that I refuse to disrespect the game that has provided so generously for my family by playing it in a halfhearted way.''

NFL Combine Results: Scouting Combine News and Rumors, Day 4

Ryan Mallett hasn't been the most impressive quarterback in this pre-draft season—that changed Sunday afternoon.

The Arkansas Razorback QB spun the football with ease and completed passes to the combine wideouts as if they had been working together for years. His strong arm was complemented by a deft touch that many doubted he possessed.

When push comes to shove, Mallett will do more for himself in private interviews than on the field, but a good effort in Indianapolis was certainly useful.

Other news and rumors from the NFL Scouting Combine:

Jake Locker (QB Washington) also had a great workout on the Lucas Oil Field. Moreover, his athleticism was on display with a 4.59 40-yard-dash. Other good workouts included: Colin Kaepernick (QB Nevada) and Christian Ponder (QB Florida State).

On the flip side, Cam Newton (QB Auburn) had a shaky workout, missing high on a number of occasions. His coach George Whitfield, a renowned QB guru, isn't worried about the performance—pointing out its nice to miss high rather than low.

In the running back class, Mark Ingram (RB Alabama) did what was needed to remain the top guy on a lot of team's boards, but the big number of the day was Da'Rel Scott (RB Maryland) with a 4.34.

Jacquizz Rodgers (RB Oregon State) ran a 4.64. Not bad, unless you remember Rodgers is extremely small at 5'5". He needed to run extremely fast to stay on many draft boards at all. Once considered a second round pick, Rodgers could be looking north of the border come April.

For the wide receivers, Julio Jones (WR Alabama) posted the most eye-popping time at 4.39. He didn't surpass AJ Green (WR Georgia) as the top wideout, but he priced himself out of the market of a lot of mid-round teams. Jones could be one of the top trade up targets in this draft.

In the combine buzz department: AJ Hawk (LB Green Bay) appears more and more likely to be headed to free agency, so do Clinton Portis (RB Washington) and Sidney Rice (WR Minnesota). The Carolina Panthers have a lot of needs, but many feel they've targeted Cam Newton and it would take quite a bit to change their mind. Nick Fairley (DL Auburn) could be in for a free fall if he doesn't convince a team that he has passable character. Detroit has been talking to numerous linebacking prospects, just no one likely to go in the first round.

Bulls Hang On to Cool Down Heat

CHICAGO -- Derrick Rose scored 26 points and Luol Deng added 20, including the tiebreaking 3-pointer, and the Chicago Bulls beat the Miami Heat 93-89 on Thursday night in a wild showdown between two of the Eastern Conference's top teams.

In a game that could have playoff seeding implications, the Bulls used a big third quarter to turn a nine-point halftime deficit into a 71-67 advantage, then watched a nine-point lead in the fourth evaporate into a four-point hole before pulling it out.

Deng's 3-pointer with 16 seconds left broke an 89-all tie and sent Chicago to its 16th win in 21 games.

Dwyane Wade scored 34 points and LeBron James (shown in dejected mood in above photo) added 29 for Miami, which got outrebounded 53-39 while losing for only the second time in 13 games. Both losses have come against teams also vying for the East's top seed -- Boston beat them on Feb. 13, and the Bulls now own the head-to-head tiebreaker.

The Bulls beat Miami by three at the United Center last month, and this one was every bit as dramatic.

Rose and Deng led the charge in the third with 12 and 10 points, respectively, as Chicago outscored Miami 27-14, and the Bulls continued to pour it on early in the fourth.

The crowd was really rocking when Ronnie Brewer nailed a jumper to make it 80-71 with 8:26 left, but the Heat weren't finished.

They answered by reeling off 13 straight points, with Mario Chalmers nailing a 3 and James hitting two free throws to put Miami ahead 84-80 with 4:52 remaining.

Oscars 2011: James Franco Takes Stage in Drag, Anne Hathaway Sings to Hugh Jackman (VIDEO)

Anne Hathaway and James Franco in drag at 'The 83rd Annual Academy Awards' Oscars 2011We're not sure if Anne Hathaway ever truly planned a musical number with Hugh Jackman for 'The 83rd Annual Academy Awards' (Sun., 8:30PM on ABC), or if she just decided to give him grief about not doing one for no particular reason, but her impromptu song did set up James Franco's most memorable outfit of the night.

Hathaway sang her number in a very nicely tailored tuxedo, so Franco decided to continue the gender bending by coming out in a rather ill-fitting pink dress.

"Oh wow!" Hathaway said when Franco came out. Her reaction was so genuine we suspect this may have been a surprise for her as well. Or maybe ... acting!

"You got to wear a tuxedo, so I wore this," Franco explained. "The weird part is I just got a text message from Charlie Sheen."

Lindsay Lohan's Humpilates on KimmelOn 'Jimmy Kimmel Live: After the Academy Awards' (Sun., 12AM ET on ABC), an abundance of Hollywood's hottest babes revealed the exercise routine responsible for their svelte look: Jimmy K and his Hottie Body Humpilates technique.

Jessica Alba, Minka Kelly, Jessica Biel and Sofia Vergara were on hand to demonstrate in Jimmy Kimmel's infomercial, each humping an exercise ball (the "HoBo"). Dressed in red spandex, Jimmy K directed them: "Hump it up. Hump it down. Take a train to humpy town!" Eva Longoria revealed, "I couldn't stop humping! I hump everywhere -- at work, at the beach, in the car."

Lindsay Lohan appeared, hand in hand with Jimmy K, to give her full endorsement -- with the help of a lion. "Lions hump upwards of 40 times a night. I've spent thousands of hours watching them." Kimmel said, "The Jimmy K program is so affordable, it's practically a steal." Lohan chimed in, "Allegedly." Wink wink.

Y U NO WORK? - How Five Modern Inventions Fail (With Graphs)

Modern day inventions like the washer/dryer, vacuum cleaner and refrigerator make everyday living easier -- and sometimes safer -- compared to the inconvenient, archaic lifestyles our prehistoric ancestors led. But sometimes, contemporary creations are far more problematic than they are useful.

No Tears for Hampton's Jerica Jenkins in Fight With Hodgkin's Lymphoma

Filed under:

Jerica JenkinsWhen doctors told Hampton point guard Jerica Jenkins that she had cancer, she cried for a long time that April day.

It's an understandable reaction, even more so for a high school freshman, which she was at the time of the diagnosis of Hodgkin's lymphoma.

That day ended, and, so too did Jenkins' tears, as it's coming up on seven years since that day, and she hasn't wasted any water on her cancer.

"I was shocked," said Jenkins, a 5-foot-4 junior from Lancaster, Tex. "I didn't believe it. I was 14. I was like, 'There's no way I have cancer.' I just couldn't believe it. I cried right then. Then, I realized that I had to deal with it and move on."

There were enough tears to go around that first day when Jenkins got the diagnosis two days after a biopsy. She and her mother cried and prayed, and then got after beating Hodgkin's, a lymphoma with a relatively high treatment rate, if detected early.

Arsenal 1 Birmingham 2: A Triumph for True Grit as Johnson Shows British Is Best

I used to hate Birmingham City when the club was owned by the seedy David Sullivan, but their Carling Cup Final victory over Arsenal had me cheering.

That’s because Alex McLeish’s glory boys proved at Wembley that British footballers can compete with the best in the business. It also proved that Premier League clubs do NOT need to spend a fortune on continental imports rather than buy the finest young talent from England’s lower divisions.

Anyway, as a lifelong footy fan I thought Birmingham fully deserved their win, even if I could have scored Obafemi Martins’ winning goal myself. I said could have, not would have!

To me it was a special occasion as the British bulldog spirit conquered supposedly one of the best club teams in the world. The experts predicted an easy win for Arsenal and instead saw them sunk by a Churchillian effort from the boys from the Midlands.

The Wembley war was won by the true grit of a Birmingham team whose starting line-up included EIGHT players from the UK and Ireland. And that is rare indeed for a Premier League team, the majority of which are packed with megabucks signings from overseas.

Please don’t label me a racist, because that is the last thing I am. While I love the way Arsenal play—indeed I think they are the best side in the Premier League—they are not an English team. They are a World XI that just happen to be based in London.

Sometimes Arsene Wenger’s team take the field without a single Brit but on Sunday the Frenchman’s World XI did at least have Jack Wilshere in the line-up. (OK Gunners fans, I accept that if Theo Walcott had not been injured, there may have been two Englishmen in the side).

I believe England’s flop in last year’s World Cup was largely due to the fact so few homegrown players feature in the top club sides. And I am convinced things would improve if Premier League bosses stopped buying abroad and started investing in the Championship—the second tier of the English game—which is packed with talented youngsters.

Birmingham centre-back Roger Johnson, one of Sunday’s bruised and battered Carling Cup heroes, is an example of what I mean.

Not because he was my hero before my beloved Cardiff City sold him for £5million a couple of years ago—and not because of the 6'3" defender’s special courage in the face of giant odds at Wembley.

Unable to train all week, he hobbled defiantly through the last half-hour after taking a knock that would have seen many lesser players carried off.

The fact is that Johnson turned in consistently brilliant performances for Cardiff week after week—yet until Birmingham came in for him, he might as well have been playing on the moon.

Not that we Bluebirds fans were complaining at the lack of interest, of course.

While the big boys were looking abroad to strengthen their defences, Roger was lifting us towards the Premier League. Now, after less than two seasons strutting his stuff at St Andrews, he is probably rated at £20 million and being touted as a future England centre-back.

What I want to know is why was Johnson not poached by any of the Premier League giants much earlier when he was turning in consistently brilliant performances week after week for Cardiff?

Ironically, a few months before Roger’s move to Birmingham, Wenger had forked out £5 million himself for Cardiff teenager Aaron Ramsey. Yet the names of the players that have since moved in at the Emirates continue to be as unspellable as ever.

At least Arsenal’s sorry losers still have something to celebrate after their Carling Cup misery. European Union law is apparently standing in the way of the desire by FIFA President Sepp Blatter and his UEFA counterpart Michel Platini to impose limits on the number of foreign players in a team.

Perhaps the solution would be a friendly agreement between the Football Association and Premier League clubs to field no more than five or maybe six overseas players in the team at any given time.

But I’m a woman. What do I know about football?

Virginia Tech Drops No. 1 Duke

BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) -- Terrell Bell scored 12 points, including five straight to give Virginia Tech the lead for good, and the Hokies beat No. 1 Duke 64-60 on Saturday night.

The Hokies (19-8, 9-5 Atlantic Coast Conference), badly in need of a signature victory to enhance their NCAA tournament credentials, got it thanks to 12-4 run over a span of 4 1/2 minutes that turned a 53-47 deficit into a 62-57 lead with 2 minutes remaining.

The Blue Devils (26-3, 12-2) had chances in the closing minute to pull even when Virginia Tech struggled at the free throw line, but couldn't capitalize. Duke had its seven-game winning streak snapped and allowed the Hokies to get a badly boost to their NCAA hopes.

Kyle Singler led Duke with 22 points and Nolan Smith had 18.

Bisping Denies Spitting on Cornerman, Rivera's Team Wants Suspension

Michael Bisping vs. Jorge RiveraIn the immediate seconds following the conclusion of an emotionally charged fight between Michael Bisping and Jorge Rivera, Bisping walked to the Octagon corner nearest to Rivera's team and spit. That much is clear. But the two sides disagree on what exactly he was aiming at, and whether he hit it.

Rivera's team says that the spit was directed -- and hit -- boxing coach Matt Phinney. Bisping denies it.

"No, not at all. I was spitting on the floor to let him know what I thought of him," Bisping told MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani in a UFC 127 post-fight interview. "I apologized for that, and I never want to act like that."

Blake Griffin and Kia Optima: Another NBA Deal for Big Bucks

Blake Griffin ought to beware of the folly of believing the hype and stunts his own league has thrust upon him.

Back in the 1950s, cheesy publicity stunts were groaned upon as money-grubbing agents and fame-hungry stars and starlets attempted all sorts of stupid tricks for the sake of an impression on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Publicity stunts now are legitimized and encouraged, with the stamp of approval by the NBA with no regard for anything but the sheer silly entertainment of it (as long as it makes money).

When young stars have an abundance of testosterone, they are apt to make unwise decisions and take unnecessary risks, as did the impressive Blake Griffin.

Within one week of the All-Star travesty, Kia Optima used a slow motion replay of the All-Star dunk for one of their epic commercials.

The highlight proved how dunk had been the brainchild of sponsors, not Blake Griffin; the goal was an endorsement with the choice of vehicle part of the ploy.

Turning the NBA extravaganza into a Bugs Bunny cartoon is historical fact, long ago sold out by Michael Jordan, but lately the game itself is overshadowed by the computer-generated effects that make Space Jam look like a documentary.

Blake Griffin may be the latest athlete to begin to believe his own press releases. He can fly around the hood like Icarus!

The NBA is so hungry to create another generation of big name box-office heroes they condone a stunt that looked impressive, but delivered sound and fury signifying only a large paycheck from the automobile company to the crown prince of the NBA.

Cue the choir. Hallelujah, Amen.  Stern sits like Nero at the Coliseum as the gladiators dance to his whims.

Our recent NBA All-Star Weekend sideshow/spectacle crossed the line into buffoon territory.

What if Blake Griffin had made one slight misstep as he cascaded over the Kia Optima hood? What would team owners do?  Respect his contract? Move on?  Blame the immature athlete for the stunt?

Millions of viewers would have watched in rapt attention as Blake was carted off on a gurney.

The NFL certainly is just as guilty. For evidence, we give you the Super Bowl halftime show: a version of Disney’s Tron on steroids to an audience in the dark, with neon-bedecked dancers providing the enthusiasm fans did not exhibit.

And, the entire scenario of basketball’s All-Star Weekend makes fans salivate for next time we have one of these overblown, poppycock events.

Shall we next have a stampede of elephants while the dribbler evades them for his fantasy dunk?  How long must we wait before we have virgin sacrifices?

The time has come for the children who run the NBA to grow up. They have turned back the clock 2,000 years in making an appeal to worst excess of Ancient Rome and/or, at least, to men with severe cases of arrested development.

We’ll always fall for the advertiser’s opera bouffe of fake heroics, like Super Bowl commercials gone wild. There is no mercy for player or fan from the NBA publicity machine.

Heat Outlast Wizards at Home as Dwyane Wade Puts Up 41 Points

Dwyane WadeMIAMI -- The Miami Heat got back to their winning ways after a tough loss to the Chicago Bulls the night before with a tougher than expected 121-113 victory over the Washington Wizards on Friday night. Competing on the second night of a back-to-back set, the Heat looked a bit sluggish in the opening quarter of the game as the Wizards looked nothing like a team who have only managed one road victory in 29 games. The surprisingly tough victory made it seven wins in a row at home and placed the Heat a half-game behind the Boston Celtics for the Eastern Conference lead.

Wade red hot from the field

Dwyane Wade got it going in the second quarter scoring 18 of his team's first 19 points with 9 straight baskets, enabling the Heat to score more than twice as many points as they did in the first quarter. Wade's 41 points came off a season high 18 field goals out of 27 attempts, though oddly enough he was wobbly from the free throw line going 3-for-9. In his finest moments, he was unstoppable as he attacked the basket while also effortlessly draining shots from all over the field including a pair of three-pointers.

"I hit some jump shots and that opened up my game," Wade explained. "I finally got it going and at the same time we needed to get back and get the lead so it was kind of one of those moments."

Wall impressive in his debut against the Heat

Even with Wade's offensive explosion, both teams played mostly even in the first half and deep into the third quarter as a result of Wizards guard Nick Young's 38 points along with prized rookie John Wall's 24 points and 12 assists. It was Wall's first game against the Heat due to injuries holding him back the first two games of the season series.

Houston Dynamo to Move East in MLS Realignment

Major League Soccer's love of conferences will be tested in 2011 by a balanced 34-game schedule, which makes the separate standings pointless, and the addition of two clubs in the Pacific Northwest.

It addressed the second problem on Friday, announcing that the Houston Dynamo will shift to the Eastern Conference after five years in the West.

Each conference will have nine clubs, thanks to the arrival of the Portland Timbers and the Vancouver Whitecaps.

The league's reasoning? Houston was the eastern-most club in the Western Conference. Done and dusted.

The move splits the Dynamo with in-state rival FC Dallas (mostly to the north, but slightly to the west), but it won't affect the number of times they'll play each other this season.

Houston's Eastern sojourn may be short. With Montreal entering the league in 2012, MLS will be forced to have one conference with 10 teams and another with nine. Houston easily could return next year, or wait until the 20th club (MLS is targeting New York City), joins the league. At that point, conferences will matter because the schedule will be unbalanced.

Either way, the Dynamo likely won't be spending too much time in the East, and they may not mind. Although the new conference offers shorter flights, it hasn't been as kind on the field. Houston has earned just 1.357 points per game against Eastern foes over the course of its five regular seasons, compared to 1.646 points per game vs. Western teams.
The most recent existing team to switch conferences was Sporting Kansas City, which moved east in 2005.

The problem created by the balanced schedule, unfortunately, remains one that fans will have to live with in 2011. MLS has committed to determining its playoff participants based on conference standings, in part to avoid the embarrassment of seeing a Western team win the Eastern title for a third straight year.

That means the sixth place team in one conference might stay home this fall while the fifth place club in the other moves on, even if it boasts a better record playing the exact same schedule.

It's unfortunate, but it should be temporary. Unless MLS finds a way to add a 13th month to the calendar, it will return to an unbalanced schedule in 2012. At that point, conference standings will be meaningful once again.

Here's the new MLS alignment:

Eastern Conference Western Conference
Chicago Fire Chivas USA
Columbus Crew Colorado Rapids
D.C. United FC Dallas
Houston Dynamo Los Angeles Galaxy
Sporting Kansas City Portland Timbers
New England Revolution Real Salt Lake
New York Red Bulls San Jose Earthquakes
Philadelphia Union Seattle Sounders
Toronto FC Vancouver Whitecaps

NBA Trade Deadline Sees Flurry of Deals

PLANET LOVETRON, NBA UNIVERSE -- Woe to those NBA fans who own an authentic or replica jersey or T-shirt of one of the following players:

Gerald Wallace, Dante Cunningham, Joel Przybilla, Aaron Brooks, Goran Dragic, Nazr Mohammed, D.J. White, Morris Peterson, Shane Battier, Hasheem Thabeet, Semih Erden, Luke Harangody, Kendrick Perkins, Nate Robinson, Jeff Green, Nenad Krstic, Baron Davis, Marquis Daniels, Jamario Moon and Mo Williams.

Those men, including draft picks and canvas sacks of cash were traded in copious amounts at one of the most active NBA trade deadlines in memory. Fans, meanwhile, will need to find cash to buy new merchandise or risk being ridiculed for being ironic in wearing an out-of-date jersey.

One day after the Utah Jazz and New Jersey Nets left jaws agape when the Jazz sent All-Star point guard Deron Williams to the Nets for point guard Devin Harris, rookie forward Derrick Favors, two first round picks and dough, the Celtics stunned many when they sent starting center Perkins and bench energizer Robinson to Oklahoma City for forward Green and center Kristic.

LeBron James calls for patience after Miami Heat lose season opener

? Expensively assembled side go down 88-80 to Boston Celtics
? Coach Erik Spoelstra: 'There's no reason to panic right now'

LeBron James has asked for patience after the Boston Celtics spoiled the opening act of his latest NBA title challenge by beating the Miami Heat 88-80 in their much-anticipated season opener last night.

"It's a feel-out process," said James, who scored 31 points but had eight turnovers in the game, played in front of a sold-out raucous crowd. "When you have so many options it's something I'm not accustomed to, having that many threats out on the court at the same time."

The two-times league MVP, who played seven seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers, and his fellow free agent Chris Bosh signed for Miami in the off-season, joining the perennial All-Star Dwyane Wade in southern Florida. With so much talent, they will be loved at home, vilified on the road, and on television as much as possible.

"We've played in hostile environments before, so that's respect," said Wade, who misfired on 12 of 16 shots against the Celtics and had six turnovers. The seven-year NBA veteran said the Heat have to "get used to playing with each other and get used to the attention this team is going to have on them".

Bosh was just as ineffective as Wade, making only three of 11 shots while creating little of the inside presence the Heat are going to need if they are to challenge for the title.

"We know what's going on," Bosh said. "We know that a lot of people are watching. We know a lot of people are really putting us under the microscope. We know that. It's evident. You turn on the TV, you see what's going on, you see what people are talking about. That's a part of the game. That's what it is.

"We knew it was going to be like that. Dealing with it is another thing. But at the end of the day, it's going to be here, it's not going anywhere. We just have to settle down."

The Heat coach, Erik Spoelstra, said over-eagerness by his players had counted against them. "There's no reason to panic right now," he said. "We knew this would be a little bit of a process, and this is the first step."

Texas Meltdown and BYU Beatdown: Potential One Seeds in the NCAA Tournament

I haven’t been in favor of BYU or San Diego State getting a one seed in the big dance, but after seeing Texas drop a game in which they had a 22-point lead in, you could make the case for BYU right now.

However you look at it, it’s pathetic for the Longhorns.  Doesn’t matter that they “tried hard” to win the game at the end.  Where were they the other 17 minutes of that half?  There’s no excuse to play that badly and out of sync for that long.  It’s a huge asterisk right now by Texas in terms of qualifying for a one seed now.  Yes, it was a two-point victory for Colorado, but it was Texas who didn’t play like they should.  As much as you want to give Colorado credit for playing hard and coming back in the second half, the same amount has to be given on how awful Texas’ shots were.

They were very rushed and they played individually, and in that second half they looked even worse than when they went down that hill last year.

Texas sucks right now, no one should be afraid to use that word, but they do have a week before the conference tournament and they need to start playing better.  This isn’t an overreaction to one game, we have seen this stuff against Nebraska and sort of against Baylor.  The good news for Texas is that they have the talent to beat anybody, and there’s no dominant team out there.  A one seed could be out of the question now unless they look great in their conference tournament, but with BYU’s big victory today, they may have stolen the Longhorns’ chances.

BYU was not scared and looked downright amazing in their game.  The game started as expected with sloppy (three turnovers each the first four minutes of the game), but eventually BYU went 14 of 24 from the three-point line and beat down San Diego State inside.  One knock you have to give the Aztecs is they could not make easy baskets inside all game.  They also didn’t defend the perimeter well, but some of Jimmer Fredette’s 25 points were made from beyond NBA range, and that’s hard to defend.

The game was fun to watch and San Diego State didn’t let BYU blow it out until the very end, but for BYU to dominate a good team like this tells you that as of right now, this team is playing incredible.  They should get the number one seed as of right now, and there’s really no debate to it.

Yes, the Moutain West Conference’s RPI is inflated with SDSU and BYU, and the Big 12 is a better conference.  But I don’t think that BYU would have given up that 22-point lead at Colorado.  That’s why BYU should be a number one seed and not Texas.

Kevin Johnson, Maloofs Lacking Communication Over Kings Relocation

Filed under:

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - With so many signs continuing to point toward a Kings exodus to Anaheim, Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson on Thursday admonished the owners of his city's only professional sports team for the way in which they've handled the ongoing process.

Johnson, the former NBA player who is so uniquely positioned in this attempt to retain the Capital City's basketball team, was reacting to an announcement from the NBA that Kings owners Joe and Gavin Maloof had requested an extension on the March 1 deadline to file for relocation. Johnson, who said he learned of the news through a Google alert in his e-mail account, wasted no time in responding.

"Today's news is very disappointing in my opinion for the city of Sacramento," Johnson said early in his news conference that lasted nearly 20 minutes and much of which can be seen here. "As you know, the Kings have asked the NBA for an extension of March 1 in terms of relocation, that deadline. I don't think you can mince words. It means one thing: they're looking for a deal elsewhere, and they're going to take the next few weeks or so to see if they can pull off something in another city, and I just think, in my opinion, Sacramento deserves better than this."

There's only a thousand Kobe Bryants: London laps up NBA's big star | Paolo Bandini

The LA Lakers No24 drew a full house to the O2 Arena but injury meant he could only play for only six minutes

Tube strikes and traffic jams be damned, Kobe Bryant was coming to London's O2 Arena. Not just one of him, in fact, but thousands, in all shapes and sizes. Tall Kobes, short Kobes, skinny Kobes, fat Kobes, female Kobes and Kobes of all different ethnicities. Some who live just down the road and others who had travelled from the other side of the globe. All meandering up the walkway that leads to the Arena's entrance, stopping to take the odd photograph or gawp at an oversized picture of... Kobe.

This is the fourth consecutive year in which the NBA has hosted a pre-season game in London, but the first in which it has brought its biggest star along for the ride. High profile players have featured ? from Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and a Boston Celtics team gearing up for a championship run in 2007 to Great Britain's own Luol Deng this time last year ? but not the one Britain really wanted to see. "Kobe is, like, the David Beckham of basketball," offered one starry-eyed teen as he queued for the shirt that would transform him, too, into No24.

Except that unlike Becks, Kobe is still at the top of his game. Last year he averaged 29.2 points through the play-offs as he led the Lakers to a second consecutive title and the fifth of his career. He was the top scorer in all but one of seven games against Boston during their finals series. He also happens to earn more than Beckham too, not that there is any animosity over such matters. The pair are close enough that one of Beckham's Milan shirts takes pride of place in Bryant's locker at the Lakers' Staples Center home.

Bryant, of course, was never going to be in championship-winning form for this, the Lakers' first pre-season game, and in the end was restricted to just over six minutes on the court as he sought to protect both a knee that is recovering from summer surgery and a fractured finger that he chose not to have operated on. A sensible decision, perhaps, though still a slightly disappointing one for an audience who did not see him find the basket in that spell.

There could have been some reaction if he had. The crowds at these games in London have always arrived with an enthusiasm verging on boisterousness and this was no different. Cheerleaders were cheered, players roared at and two fans jeered mercilessly after they failed to identify the Neighbours theme tune when summoned to the floor for a time-out challenge.

Nevertheless, there was no disguising the fact that the greatest volume all evening had been achieved when Kobe emerged on to the floor. When he rose for a jump shot two minutes into the contest, hundreds more Kobes rose with him only to crash back to their seats as the ball clanged away off the rim. He would miss two further shots, both from three-point range, before departing.

The notion that he could be back in London soon had already been shot down in a pre-game press conference held by the NBA commissioner, David Stern, and the AEG CEO Tim Leiweke. AEG has close ties with the Lakers, running the Staples Center, while Leiweke is on the team's board of directors, but when asked if LA could become regulars at the O2 (also run by AEG), his response was immediate: "Not gonna happen" as long as Phil Jackson remains coach. Stern was more circumspect, insisting variety would keep things fresh.

There was mercifully little discussion in the same conference of whether the NBA could ever establish a franchise in these parts. The question was raised, but only briefly. It has been posed so often as to become tedious. The response was the same as ever; Stern suggesting the most realistic scenario would see several teams formed at once in Europe to create a new conference before adding that nothing was likely to happen on this front for at least a decade.

The fans were far more concerned with the here and now. The first chants of "We Want Kobe" began late in the third-quarter and there were further appeals throughout the final period. Before the end there was even a smattering of boos. On the bench Bryant grinned, but even with his team trailing, Jackson was unmoved. He is paid to win championships, not pre-season games, and he will need a healthy Bryant if he is to secure a third of those in a row.

And so the Timberwolves won, 111-92, leaving the would-be Kobes in the stands to swallow their disappointment and pack off home. Many will be back for the two regular season games between the New Jersey Nets and Toronto Raptors in March, though it is worth noting that while tickets sold out for tonight's game in "literally a day", according to Leiweke, there is still some availability for those two. A meaningful game, it seems, is less important to fans than a meaningful player.

Americans Abroad: Clint Dempsey, Jonathan Spector Keep Scoring Goals

clint dempsey jonathan spector u.s. soccerSeveral Americans abroad found net this weekend, a few settled in with new clubs, and one even did both. But amid it all, Clint Dempsey continued to set the gold standard for Yanks abroad.

The Fulham midfielder scored both goals in the Cottagers' 2-0 home win over Stoke City on Saturday, bringing his English Premier League total to eight on the season -- five more than Fulham's second-leading scorer.

The crafty Texan scored the opener in the 33rd minute when, in vintage Dempsey fashion, he launched a goal-crashing run to beat his man to the ball and slide Andy Johnson's cross into the roof of the net (photo).

Ana "The Hurricane" Julaton Retains WBO Women's Bantamweight Title

Filipino-American Ana "The Hurricane" Julaton retained her WBO Bantamweight title Friday night against Mexican-American Francesca "The Chosen One" Alcanter at the Craneway Pavillion in Richmond, Calif.

Julaton, who was trained by Manny Pacquiao's trainer, Freddie Roach, won via a unanimous decision in the 10-round Bay Area boxing event.

The lovely lady boxer used her left-hand jabs all throughout the fight, which inflicted major damage to Alcanter's face.

The lopsided fight went through 10 rounds with no knockdowns or life-threatening damage to the fighters. The three judges’ scorecards read 99-92, 97-93 and a rather inexplicable 96-94.

Former WBC Flyweight Champion Rodel Mayol served as sparring partner of Julaton during her training for the defense of her WBO Bantamweight title.

The 10-round championship bout dubbed “The Return of the Hurricane" was shown in the Philippines live on Channel 5 and Aksyon TV 41 at 12 noon, Manila time.

Born in in San Francisco, Julaton is 5'5" and an orthodox fighter.

She won the San Francisco Golden Gloves, the California State Championships, was a Diamond Belt champion, and closed out her amateur career by winning the silver medal in the United States Amateur Championships.

Julaton said in a post-fight interview she will try to stage her next fight in the Philippines possibly within the year.

Alcanter is originally from Kansas City, Mo. She stands 5'4" and, likewise, is an orthodox boxer.

Alcanter's (18-9-1) last fight was held in Germany against Ina Menzer, which she lost.
