CBI 2011 Basketball Tournament Starts Tomorrow, But Can Two Former NCAA Cinderella's Advance.
If you're a fan of the NCAA tournament, you remember Davidson and Creighton. Both of these teams have histories of making a big splash on the biggest stage in college basketball.
Who could ever forget the Wildcats' run to the Elite Eight, powered by the hot shooting of Stephen Curry before losing to Kansas by two points, costing Davidson its dream of becoming the next George Mason to shock the world.
Creighton has been an upset special in the past but has never seen recent success that rivals what the Wildcats did just a couple of years ago. These two teams will be hosing in the first-round of the CBI, with Davidson taking on James Madison and Creighton taking on San Jose State tomorrow night.
Both of these teams should walk away with victories and if I don't, I'll be shocked. One of the things I like about this tournament is the fact that teams get to host games on their home floor and get that great college atmosphere that is sometimes lacking from the NCAA tournament.
Davidson is a well-coached team, with Bob McKillop pacing the sidelines and the Wildcats should be able to handle James Madison with little difficulty. However, I have less faith in Creighton, who has a rookie coach in Greg McDermott and we'll see how he handles some pressure-filled basketball.
Despite that concern about the Blue Jays, I like the chances of seeing these two teams matched up in the quarterfinals. In a couple of years, we could look back and say that this was a game between two teams that went on to shock us in the NCAA tournament.
It's happened before and it will happen again.
