The United States men's team was confident going into the match against Canada, playing very smoothly and showing why they are one of the favorites to win the Gold Cup.
They won the match, 2-0, and now face Panama in another Group C encounter.
With a victory, the U.S. earn a trip to the quarterfinals, but a loss or draw sets up a do-or-die match against Guadeloupe.
All signs are pointing to the U.S. getting the win against Panama, as they are 24-0-2 against Panama all-time in group play at the Gold Cup. The United States' most recent victory against Panama came in 2009, when they eliminated them from the Gold Cup in the quarterfinals.
However, Panama will be a much more difficult opponent than the Canadians were, so a lack of effort from the Americans cannot happen.
Panama is a very offensive team and looks to get out of the gates quick. Striker Luis "Matador" Tejada is a player the U.S. must keep a close eye on. He is very skilled and a great scorer, netting a goal for Panama in the 3-2 win against Guadeloupe.
Another player that could cause the U.S. some trouble is midfielder Armando Cooper. Cooper is only 23-years-old and is already one of the best players on this Panama squad. He is a very skilled passer and loves to give through balls to his forwards.
Panama also has some weaknesses that the Americans are sure to capitalize on. For one, the talent gap favors USA and gives them a significant edge.
If the United States can possess the ball longer and avoid counterattacks from Panama, the US should win this game easily.
My final score prediction: United States 3, Panama 0.
Jozy Altidore will score again for the U.S., while Landon Donovan and Michael Bradley will chip in, scoring their first goals in the 2011 Gold Cup.
