A music startup called Indaba has been running intense remix contests using the work of famous artists. Anyone can join a contest, and prizes often include free recording sessions and song royalties. One of Indaba's founders (a friend) showed me some of the contests a few weeks ago. Some highlights:
- Rivers Cuomo's 'My Brain Is Working Overtime' remix contest - My fave is 'My Brain Is 1929,' a ragtime mix that reminds me of ragtime Eminem and the band Man Man. Listen for the reference to 'If I Only Had a Brain.'
- Marcy Playground's 'Sex and Candy' remix contest - This one's still open to submissions. Go remix an alt-rock classic, or listen to some cross-genre mixes.
- OK Go's 'White Knuckles' remix contest - The internet's official band gets remixed by the internet.
- Indaba holiday album contest - Indaba's users made a Christmas album with songs both traditional and clubbish. Sounds like a collaboration between Sinatra, Brubeck and Justice.
- David Minnick - My personal favorite artist on Indaba, Minnick joins many of its contests. His remixes transfigurate the originals, and include new instrumental tracks that he records in his home studio. His submission to the Christmas album plays like a Turkish party song from the Squirrel Nut Zippers and Moxy Fruvous.
