Texas Meltdown and BYU Beatdown: Potential One Seeds in the NCAA Tournament

I haven’t been in favor of BYU or San Diego State getting a one seed in the big dance, but after seeing Texas drop a game in which they had a 22-point lead in, you could make the case for BYU right now.

However you look at it, it’s pathetic for the Longhorns.  Doesn’t matter that they “tried hard” to win the game at the end.  Where were they the other 17 minutes of that half?  There’s no excuse to play that badly and out of sync for that long.  It’s a huge asterisk right now by Texas in terms of qualifying for a one seed now.  Yes, it was a two-point victory for Colorado, but it was Texas who didn’t play like they should.  As much as you want to give Colorado credit for playing hard and coming back in the second half, the same amount has to be given on how awful Texas’ shots were.

They were very rushed and they played individually, and in that second half they looked even worse than when they went down that hill last year.

Texas sucks right now, no one should be afraid to use that word, but they do have a week before the conference tournament and they need to start playing better.  This isn’t an overreaction to one game, we have seen this stuff against Nebraska and sort of against Baylor.  The good news for Texas is that they have the talent to beat anybody, and there’s no dominant team out there.  A one seed could be out of the question now unless they look great in their conference tournament, but with BYU’s big victory today, they may have stolen the Longhorns’ chances.

BYU was not scared and looked downright amazing in their game.  The game started as expected with sloppy (three turnovers each the first four minutes of the game), but eventually BYU went 14 of 24 from the three-point line and beat down San Diego State inside.  One knock you have to give the Aztecs is they could not make easy baskets inside all game.  They also didn’t defend the perimeter well, but some of Jimmer Fredette’s 25 points were made from beyond NBA range, and that’s hard to defend.

The game was fun to watch and San Diego State didn’t let BYU blow it out until the very end, but for BYU to dominate a good team like this tells you that as of right now, this team is playing incredible.  They should get the number one seed as of right now, and there’s really no debate to it.

Yes, the Moutain West Conference’s RPI is inflated with SDSU and BYU, and the Big 12 is a better conference.  But I don’t think that BYU would have given up that 22-point lead at Colorado.  That’s why BYU should be a number one seed and not Texas.
