Anderson Silva's Victory Over Vitor Belfort At UFC 126 Puts Us One Fight Away From The Biggest Match-up In UFC History
Anderson Silva and Georges St-Pierre have been the two best fighters in UFC for the last four years. Silva hasn't lost a fight in his UFC career (13-0). St-Pierre hasn't lost a round since August 2007, a span of seven fights.
Fans have been clamoring for a dream match-up between these two men for a long time. But there has always been some obstacle in the way. The biggest obstacle is that Silva competes as a middleweight fighter (185 lbs) and St-Pierre fights as a welterweight (170 lbs). St-Pierre has constantly said that he doesn't want to shift up and down between weight classes.
Dana White has said that if Silva defeats Vitor Belfort and St-Pierre defeats Jake Shields there would be no reason not to do the fight. St-Pierre seems poised to make the move up to middleweight, and give the fans the match-up that they have dreamed of.
Silva was able to take care of business with Belfort at UFC 126. Now, the onus falls on St-Pierre to defeat Shields at UFC 129, and the ball will be set in motion.
Obviously anything can happen between now and then, and negotiations between the two camps could fall apart. But in the best interest of the UFC, and in the best interest of the fans, make sure you are rooting for St-Pierre to win on April 30.
A fight against each other might be the only way that one of these two MMA legends loses again.
