Even as they tried to trumpet the most ambitious signing in their history, the Nationals couldn't escape the shadow of that team a few hours up I-95.
Two hours before the Phillies were set to introduce Cliff Lee, Washington finally unveiled its marquee offseason signing, Lee's former Phillies teammate Jayson Werth, and the only surprise was that it took more than a question or two for someone to ask the outfielder about the goings-on back in the City of Brotherly Love.
"I missed that in Philly -- what happened?" Werth deadpanned before immediately steering the conversation back to his new home.
Yes, Werth and the Nationals still have plenty of work to do before they get to the point of challenging the Phillies on their NL East perch. But the seven-year, $126 million man exuded confidence Wednesday as he spelled out his reasons for leaving a perennial playoff contender to join a team that has lost 298 games the last three seasons.
