Derek Jeter: Why Yankees Captain Would Not Have Helped AL In All Star Game

With all the controversy surrounding Derek Jeter not showing up at this year's MLB all star game, there was one thing that people didn't even bother to think about: National League pitching.

The National League completely overwhelmed the American League in last night's game, getting a big boost from Prince Fielder's three-run home run and some really good, really dominating pitching. Jeter wasn't going to do anything to help the American League against that.

I understand that Jeter's decision not to show up was the source of controversy, not the fact that he wasn't playing in the game. But if he wasn't going to play in the game, why would he waste a day off in a place that he didn't absolutely have to be.

Reports came out yesterday that said Jeter was in Miami with his girlfriend, actress Minka Kelly, which seemed to add fuel to the controversy fire. To the people that were outraged about that, all I can say is he didn't do anything that any other American would do.

The baseball season is a grind, much more difficult than people know, and if you get a few days in the season, especially at age 37, where you can get away from it all, then take it. We all need a break from our jobs at some point and this was Jeter's chance to clear his head.

The American League didn't need him anyway, the rating for the game on Fox wasn't going to go up or down if Jeter is there or not and sports writers wasted an entire day even talking about this like it was the worst thing in the world.

Jeter deserved a break from baseball and other players deserved to be at the game more than he did anyway. The world will still be spin on its axis the same way it did before he decided not to show up.

The National League was superior to the American League last night, and one mediocre shortstop wasn't going to change that.
