The trade deadline is on July 31 at four in the afternoon, eastern time. The New York Mets have already shown they will be sellers, not buyers, this year.
They've already dealt closer Francisco Rodriguez to the Milwaukee Brewers for two prospects yet to be named. Who will be leaving Flushing next?
It certainly won't be shortstop Jose Reyes. Jose Reyes, despite being currently on the disabled list for a short stint, has easily been the best player on the team. Perhaps even in the National League, or maybe even the entire Major League, in some peoples' eyes.
He leads the entire league in average, with a .354 mark. Despite being injured for a few games, he's tied for fifth in the league in runs with 65. He is also second in the league in stolen bases with 30.
Those are some very pretty numbers. He, David Wright, and Ike Davis are the three players the Mets should build around. Reyes is an integral part of the team.
He's been the best leadoff hitter in the game, is an outstanding shortstop defensively, and his speed and attitude brings a spark to the Mets that help give them life.
After owner Fred Wilpon's comments on Reyes, saying that if he thinks he's going to get Carl Crawford money, he's crazy, Reyes has came to life, and gone on a tear, more than a hot streak. He's been unstoppable for the Mets, turning in multi-hit game after multi-hit game.
So who will the Mets trade, you may ask? The Mets are planning to trade outfielder Carlos Beltran to a contender. They're almost sure to trade Beltran to another team.
If they trade Beltran and clear up some more money in that deal, the Mets will surely have enough money to support Reyes and most of the other team.
Reyes will not be going anywhere, Sandy Alderson would be crazy to trade his best player. Jose will remain a Met.
