Dallas Cowboys: Top Ten Reasons They Will Fare Better in 2011

2010 was a miserable year for the Dallas Cowboys and their fans. It may well have been the most disappointing year in team history.

Never fear silver and blue bloods: a new year has dawned and 2011 will be much kinder to your Cowboys.

That is, if there is football in 2011. Big "if" there.

So, provided there is NFL football in 2011, here are the top ten reasons the Cowboys will fare better and find themselves once more in contention for postseason play and more...

Number One: No more Wade Phillips.

It is not yet clear who will coach the Cowboys in 2011, but it is clear that it will not be the under-achieving, over-excusing, pompom-waving, affable Phillips.

Not long after his dismissal, Wade Phillips went on a Virginia Beach radio station and compared his Cowboys record to that of Tom Landry, saying that he had left with the same winning percentage as the Cowboys' legendary coach of 29 years.  That laughable statement is roughly the equivalent of me saying I am as wealthy as Jerry Jones because we both have accounts at Chase Bank.

The truth of the matter is Wade took a team built by Parcells, poised to take that next step, and rode it into the ground. Based on the talent base and the ultimate results, Phillips may actually be the worst coach in team history, with apologies to his defensive backs coach and former Cowboys head coach Dave Campo.

Number Two: Jerry Jones will be compelled to make coaching and personnel decisions that are best for the team, rather than merely selecting the best candidates who are most likely to be "yes" men.

Jerry Jones, in a drunken admission recorded on a cell phone and posted on YouTube, confessed he only hired Parcells to shut the media up and change public perception so he could get his precious stadium built. Of course, once Parcells had had enough of Jones' ridiculous meddling and left town, Jerry immediately hired himself the most capable puppet available: Wade Phillips.

Wade Phillips proceeded to give Jerry his most humiliating moments. The Cowboys suffered a huge blowout loss to the Eagles in the final game of 2009, ending the team's playoff hopes. They lost the last game ever in Texas Stadium to the Ravens. They lost the first game ever in the new stadium to the hated New York Giants. They were utterly destroyed by the Minnesota Vikings in the 2010 playoffs, after winning their first playoff game in 15 years. And they were throttled and embarrassed by the Green Bay Packers on Sunday Night Football, falling to a ridiculous 1–7 record at the time.

Financially, Jones is in it up to his false teeth with that new stadium. He cannot afford to put his ego ahead of the team's success. As badly as he wants to construct things so that this time he will get the credit for success, rather than the coach (he still smarts over the Jimmy Johnson days), he will have to make moves that make sense, or suffer dire consequences. Whether he ultimately decides to stick with Jason Garrett or to pursue one of the proven Super Bowl-winning coaches available, you can bet he will make the hire with the primary concern being whether the coach can take the Dallas Cowboys back to Super Bowl glory.

Number Three: The Cowboys will get a top ten 2011 draft pick.

While it is always dicey to have Jerry pulling the strings on draft day, it is much more difficult to screw up a top ten draft pick than one in the latter part of the first round. With so many holes to fill—offensive line, defensive line, safety, linebacker, cornerback—there figures to be real value and a potential opening day starter available when the Cowboys make their first pick.

Number Four: The 2011 schedule will favor the Cowboys.

The NFL has worked its schedule so that out-of-division play features matchups between teams who finished in the same place in divisional standings. First place teams face first place teams, second place teams face second place teams, and so on. The Cowboys had a murderous schedule this year because they won their division in 2009.

Number Five: Dez Bryant will continue to emerge.

Dez Bryant was the best first-round pick the Cowboys have made since DeMarcus Ware. In an injury-shortened rookie season, Dez caught 45 passes for 561 yards and six touchdowns. He was the king of the circus catch, and easily the most aggressive offensive skill player on the team.

In addition to his prowess as a big-play receiver, Dez was a special teams standout. He had 15 punt returns for 215 yards and two touchdowns. He also returned 12 kickoffs for 293 yards.

Number Six: The Cowboys will be forced to get younger at inside linebacker.

Keith Brooking has been a pro bowl player. He has been a team leader. He has also been the heart and soul of the Cowboys' defense since his arrival two years ago. Unfortunately, that defense is one of the worst in the league now, and Brooking has clearly lost a step. It happens to the best of them, and he is among the best of them.

The harsh reality is that neither Bradie James nor Brooking have had much of an impact this year, other than being torched on passing routes and gouged by the running game. Both men are leaders. They just have not performed in 2010.

Sean Lee may be part of the answer. He had better be. But there will have to be someone else emerge, as well.

Number Seven: The Cowboys will address the safety position.

Alan Ball works hard. But, as Clark Griswold's father-in-law famously said, "So do washing machines."

The Dallas Cowboys must have help at the safety position. Good safety play is absolutely essential to the success of any defense. Too often, the Cowboys' safeties are seen coming into the picture just in time to wave at a receiver as he races to the end zone. Inept safety play impacts the effectiveness of cornerbacks, because they have to play softer and less aggressively, when they know there is no adequate help over the top.

Number Eight: There will be more Tashard Choice and less Marion Barber.

Marion Barber was once a great change-of-pace back, coming in to relieve Julius Jones late in the game, when the defense was tired. He used his relentless, battering ram style to break down said defenses and secure victories. Then, he became the featured back and has never been very effective since.

Barber is showing signs of slowing down. It may be that his bruising running style has taken its toll on body and mind.

Marion Barber also continues to make boneheaded decisions that hurt his team, like ripping off his helmet after a touchdown or over-celebrating a three-yard run.

Meanwhile, Choice has shown himself to be perhaps the most complete back on the team. He can get the tough yards. He can make the important play in the passing game. He can break off a good run here and there.

Number Nine: Jon Kitna has impacted this team.

Tony Romo is not a fiery leader, like one known for holding his teammates accountable. His most famous quote to date is something like, "Football is fun."

Kitna is a different kind of cat. He is fiery. He is ultra-competitive. He will get in your face just as quickly as he will jump in your arms. He also stands up and takes responsibility for failure, even if it doesn't necessarily belong to him.

Romo and Kitna seem to have a good rapport. You have to believe that Romo has been watching his more-experienced replacement operate. Expect Tony to be focused and single-minded come 2011.

Oh, and healthy. A healthy Romo is absolutely essential to this team's success.

Number Ten: Training Camp will actually take place.

The Cowboys treated the 2010 training camp like a rock band tour, moving it three different times, from San Antonio to California to Dallas. Only a handful of days were actually spent in full pads, featuring full contact.

Coach Wade "Marshmallow Puff" Phillips felt he had the kind of team he could just suit up and run out there and win enough games to keep his job. Competition for starting positions was nonexistent. There was a sense of entitlement that permeated the organization, from the owner/general manager and the head coach on down.

Whomever Jerry chooses to lead this team is bound to change that. (Heck, late-season practices under Jason Garrett have been more intense than training camp was under Phillips.)

It is a new year and hope springs eternal. Off with the old. On with the new.

Raise your glass to the new-look, more successful Dallas Cowboys.

Cheers!

Stuart Holden Rated Premier League's Top Player by Guardian Readers

stuart holden premier league guardianU.S. national team midfielder Stuart Holden is the best player in the English Premier League.

All right, maybe that statement is just a tad premature. But based on The Guardian's analysis of readers' player ratings, Holden has been the highest-rated performer throughout the first half of the Premier League campaign, with an average mark of 7.4 out of 10.

Yes, English fans have rated an American as the best player in the world's most popular league.

The 25-year-old has started each of his 16 league appearances for Bolton this season, going the full 90 in all but one contest as Wanderers have made a surprising run to seventh place (6-4-8).

Polar Bears Outsmart BBC Spy Cameras, It's Hilarious (The One)

When the BBC made a documentary about polar bears in the wild, they decided to disguise their hidden cameras so that they were as "unobstrusive and resilient" as possible. Cool in theory, but it turns out polar bears don't really care how speedy your camera on skis is, they just want to smoosh it and see if there's anything edible inside.

Pretty much every camera the crew deployed got destroyed, and they came with a bunch of cameras -- by land, by sea, glued to a rock like a Star Wars gun turret. So much ~*~imagination~*~ for a few seconds of footage before the bears' predatory instincts kicked in.

Watching this is a lot like watching WALL-E, because the cameras are cute, only instead of crying like a five-year-old you're lol-ing and "D'aww"-ing because baby polar bears are fuzzy and omg the snowball robot.

We get it -- you're busy. Only have time for one web bit a day? Here's The One thing we think you cannot miss today. Subscribe to "The One" RSS Feed.

Ronaldinho to Spurn Galaxy, on Verge of Return to Brazil

ronaldinhoThe long-running rumors connecting Ronaldinho with the Los Angeles Galaxy apparently are a signature or two away from finally being silenced.

The Brazilian icon and 2010 World Cup snub reportedly has agreed to terms with Grêmio, the club from his home town of Porto Alegre with which he began his career a dozen years ago.

Grêmio president Paulo Odone told RBS television on Wednesday that the contract terms are "all settled" and that all that remains is for the player to secure his release from AC Milan.

"Ronaldinho wants to go back to Grêmio, which is his home -- where he began playing football," Odone said.

The RBS interview is scheduled to air on Thursday, according to the club's Web site.

Ronaldinho joined Milan in the summer of 2008 after five years with Barcelona, which sold the player to the Italian giant for just under $30 million. His form and health have been inconsistent since. While he appeared revitalized during much of the 2009-10 season, he now has not started a Serie A match for the league leaders in more than two months.
Discussions between Ronaldinho and the Galaxy are thought to have been quite serious, and there was a definite possibility that the two-time FIFA world player of the year would come to Major League Soccer.

Tim Tebow: Hope Returns To the Denver Broncos and Their Fans

Even if Tim Tebow can’t carry the Denver Broncos to victory Sunday over the San Diego Chargers in the season finale, he has given all of Broncos Country one thing as a new year beckons:

Hope. Unyielding hope.

That may not sound like much to fans of other teams, but after what the normally fiercely loyal Broncos fans have been through the past two (and if you include the epic Shanahan collapse of 2008, three) seasons, you might as well have just handed them the Lombardi Trophy.

Think about all the Broncos faithful have been through the last two seasons.  After blowing a three game lead in the AFC West in 2008, owner Pat Bowlen decided to clean house and fire Shanahan after he delivered the team’s only Super Bowl titles.    Out was the established hand and in was a 32 year old hotshot from the three time Super Bowl champion New England Patriots, offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.

McDaniels almost immediately began taking trade offers for quarterback Jay Cutler and Cutler became irked.  After an embarrassing back and forth between the quarterback and team, Cutler was shipped to the Chicago Bears for Kyle Orton and a pair of draft picks.  Take another dustup with Pro Bowl receiver Brandon Marshall, and another epic collapse after a 6-0 start, Broncos fans thought they’d hit rock bottom.

Then 2010 started.

After a disastrous 3-9 start coupled with a bad to sequel to the first Spygate scandal, McDaniels was fired and replaced on an interim basis by running backs Eric Studesville.  After one game, Studesville turned to what may be the one bright light of the McDaniels era and what a bright light it could be:

Tim Tebow, the supposed Mile High Messiah.

After Orton suffered a rib injury, Tebow was given the Week 16 start against the Oakland Raiders.  Even though the Broncos suffered another embarrassing defeat to their arch rivals, Tebow showed enough, including a spectacular 40 yard touchdown run on what Tebow and Studesville called a broken play (Tebow was actually graded a minus on it), that Studesville went ahead and gave the rookie another start at home against the Houston Texans.

At Mile High, Tebow brought the Mile High Magic back and in a big way.

Down 17-0 to the Texans, it seemed like Broncos fans were in for another letdown and another blowout loss.

Pardon the pun, but hold your horses.

With Tebow in command, the Broncos stormed back.  Despite an admitted boneheaded interception in the end zone earlier in the game, the rookie quarterback bounced back and willed his team to a 24-23, running the game winning score from seven yards out in himself.  Finishing  the day with over 300 yards passing and two touchdowns (one passing, one rushing), Tebow gave Broncos Country the best Christmas present they could have asked for after such a disastrous season:

Hope.

It’s hard to believe that this was the same offense Orton was fizzling with only weeks earlier.  He may be the better quarterback than Tebow right now, but No. 15 brought something to the huddle that Orton definitely was not bringing:

Passion. Fire. The “it” factor.

Whatever you want to call it, Tebow brought it.  For anyone who doubts that, take a look at the SoundFX segment on NFL.com where Tebow was wired for sound during the Texans game. Did you ever see Orton running around shouting “LET’S GO!” to his teammates?

Didn’t think so.

After many years of suffering since the retirement of John Elway after winning Super Bowl XXXIII, Broncos fans seemingly finally have a quarterback they can fully embrace.  Fans never really were behind Brian Griese, Jake Plummer, Cutler or Orton.  Sure, they all had their backers but no player since Elway has brought the fans together like Tebow has.

Speaking of Elway, it sounds like it is just a matter of time before it is announced that he will be joining the Broncos front office in some kind of executive capacity.  What authority Elway will have exactly remains to be seen, but having him back in the organization can only be a good thing.

Tebow at quarterback and Elway in the front office to surround him with talent and advise the young quarterback.

Sounds like Orange and Blue Heaven to me.

Even with the imminent hiring of a new head coach, all of Broncos Country seems to have reborn with such great optimism.  Maybe they don’t have to sit through years of losing before even tasting contention like the Raiders and Kansas City Chiefs have.  Maybe the corner will be turned much sooner than anyone expected.

Broncos fans, you can see clearly now. The rain has gone and a new age is ahead.

Mike Haywood, New Pitt Coach, Arrested on Domestic Violence Charge

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) -- New Pittsburgh coach Mike Haywood was jailed Friday on a domestic violence charge after an incident at his South Bend home.

Assistant St. Joseph County Police Chief Bill Redman said Haywood was arrested about 3 p.m. Friday after a custody issue developed with a woman with whom Haywood has a child. The unidentified woman told police that Haywood grabbed her by the arm and neck and pushed her as she tried to leave.

Redman said the woman had marks on her neck, arms and back.

"The University of Pittsburgh is aware of an alleged incident involving head football coach Michael Haywood today in South Bend, Indiana," the school said in an e-mailed statement. "The University expects the highest standards of conduct from its employees, including its coaches, and any breach of those standards is a very serious matter. The University will decline further comment until more complete information is available."

Haywood will be held without bond in the St. Joseph County jail until he goes before a judge. Redman said that might occur over the weekend, but no later than Monday.

Pittsburgh hired Haywood on Dec. 16 to replace Dave Wannstedt, who resigned under pressure. Haywood led Miami (Ohio) to a 9-4 record this season and the Mid-American Conference championship.

The 46-year-old Haywood also has been an assistant coach at Army, Ohio University, Ball State, LSU, Texas and alma mater Notre Dame.
