Dallas Mavericks on brink of first NBA title after beating Miami Heat

? Late run gives Dallas 112-103 win over Miami
? LeBron James held to two points in final quarter

The Dallas Mavericks used a storming late run to move to the brink of their first NBA title with a 112-103 victory over the Miami Heat on Thursday.

With a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven finals, Dallas can now claim the crown by winning one of the two remaining games, but they will have to complete the feat in Miami, where the teams split the opening two games.

The Mavericks went on a 15-3 run to finish off the Heat, turning a three-point deficit into the comfortable victory amid chants of "Beat the Heat" from a boisterous crowd of 20,433.

"That was a big win for us, obviously," said Dirk Nowitzki, who inspired the Mavericks with 29 points. "We didn't want to go to Miami and give them basically two shots to close us out.

"So we kept plugging there in the fourth. And now we have to go down there and basically approach Sunday's game as game seven. You don't want to give this great team any hope."

The guard Jason Terry had a pair of three-pointers during the game-ending run, finishing with 21 points on eight-of-12 shooting and adding six assists.

Dallas shot 57%, including an eyebrow-raising 13 of 19 from beyond the arc. Terry was three for five from long range, draining two of those during the late-game run.

"All season long, ever since I've been a Maverick, I've been the guy in the fourth quarter they depended on to either make plays or make shots," said Terry.

"So I really relish that role. Regardless of what's going on throughout three quarters of the game, in the fourth quarter I know I'm depended on to come through. Thank God I was able to do that again tonight."

LeBron James disappeared once again in the fourth quarter, tallying only two points. The former NBA scoring champion and two-times MVP has now amassed a combined 11 points in the final quarter of the entire series.

James was blanked in the final frame of Tuesday's 86-83 Mavericks victory, and while he was more aggressive on Thursday, he had similar results.

"We as a team, we played good enough to win again," said James, who scored 17 points and had 10 rebounds and 10 assists. "We put ourself in position to win down the stretch. Guys made plays. They just made a few more than we did. That's what it came down to."

Dwyane Wade had 23 for the Heat, scoring 10 in the final quarter, while Chris Bosh added 19. Wade bruised his hip in the opening quarter when he collided with Dallas's Brian Cardinal.

He went to the locker room but returned shortly after and played 34 minutes in the emotionally charged affair.

"It was unfortunate I had to leave the game," said Wade. "But I came back and I finished it. Once you're on the court, you're on the court. I don't have no excuses. I was able to help my team get an opportunity to win. And I'll be fine Sunday."

Dallas shot 56.5% from the floor but were out-rebounded 36-26 by a Miami team that committed 16 turnovers on the way to registering consecutive losses for the first time this post-season.

The Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said Terry took on the responsibility of team leader when the Mavericks' best player, Nowitzki, was on the bench.

"He played great, and during periods where Dirk was out of the game we were going to him and he was delivering," Carlisle said. "Those are tough minutes for us because it's hard when Dirk is out of the game. But it's the total game we've all been preaching to Jet [Terry] since the play-offs began and tonight he did a terrific job."

NBA Rumors: Will Brandon Knight Expose Kyrie Irving in Workout Battle?

Rumors Swirling NBA Point Guard Prospects Kyrie Irving and Brandon Knight Could Work Out Against Each Other

Kentucky point guard Brandon Knight quickly moved up draft boards last month and is widely considered a top five or top three selection in the draft.

He is a highly athletic, electrifying, explosive and dynamic point guard. His jump shot is continuously improving and is a fearless attacker as he penetrates the defense on his way to the basket. He?s also ready to go for broke.

Duke point guard Kyrie Irving has been the majority?s pick for No. 1 overall, but Knight is about to debunk that theory.

?Brandon Knight said he?d work out against Kyrie Irving,? according to Brian T. Smith per HoopsHype.com.

If these two meet one on one on the hardwood, Knight could very well expose Irving in the battle. Kyrie might have more mass, but Brandon?s quickness will separate him. Kyrie is superior on the court for his passing ability, vision and leadership, but Knight has the athletic edge, which could knock Kyrie off his pedestal.

Knight will enter the league drawing justifiable comparisons to Oklahoma City?s Russell Westbrook. The NBA point guard is shifting towards a more athletic and shooting guard-esque type of player. Although Irving draws comparisons to New Orleans? Chris Paul for being soft-spoken and humble, that will not help him if this work out battle goes down.

In this scenario, the Kentucky prospect has nothing to lose and everything to gain, while the Duke product could lose his No. 1 overall spot.

If Irving looks inferior to Knight, expect Arizona forward Derrick Williams to be Cleveland?s clear cut No. 1 selection atop the draft. This would allow them to still land Turkey?s Enes Kanter or Knight himself.

Williams and Knight would create a thrilling tandem as Cleveland jump starts its rebuilding era. Brandon is clearly trying to create a buzz less than a week away from the draft?and he?s doing a great job. If Kyrie doesn?t accept the work out challenge, will people think less or even doubt him and his abilities?

The ball is in his court.

US Open Golf 2011: 15 Surprising Things About the Leaderboard

So far, the US Open is showing that golf can be exciting without Tiger Woods. Thursday’s revolving leaderboard included players from a variety of countries including, for a while, Bubba Watson, Ryan Palmer, YE Yang and Francesco Molinari, before settling in to a multicultural display of golf prowess.

Here are the top 15 unexpected happenings:

1. Rory McIlroy took the lead late in the afternoon at six under (par) round. He worked his way around the golf course with no bogeys. His playing companions, Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson, were a combined 13 strokes higher.

“This week it's about being aggressive to the spots,” McIlroy said. "A lot of it this week, there's 200‑yard plates and 150‑yard plates on the fairway. A lot of holes I'm just trying to hit it to the 150 spot off the tee, and then I'm playing my iron shot in from there, so it's being aggressive to the target that you have.”

2. Charl Schwartzel is in second place at three under (par). Grand Slam fever anyone?

3. Y.E. Yang led for about three hours until Rory McIlroy pulled away from the field with two birdies on his back nine. Yang finished the day tied for second. He birdied the par-three 10th, which was his first hole.

“I really didn’t think about it being intimidating until we went up on the tee and the two players in front of me, Ryo Ishikawa and Anthony Kim, when they both dropped it in the water, that’s when it really hit me that, ‘Oh, this hole is really tough.’”

Yang admitted that he was both disappointed and happy that Tiger Woods was not in the field. "As a fellow PGA Tour member, I really hope that he comes back quite soon because it’s just a little big different when he’s not there,” Yang explained through his interpreter.

He felt it was an advantage that he had already won a major.

“In Korea, they say that it takes a winner to recognize a winner,” he said. “I know the feeling, and I know that it’s a little more of everything in a major than it is in other tournaments, so it’s easier for me to cope with that kind of pressures.”

4. Phil Mickelson put a ball in the water on his first hole, the 10th. Strangely enough, it is not what he planned to do prior to the tournament.

“When I play that hole, three is a great score,” he said.  “I'll take three every day, and if I happen to make a four, so be it. But you've got to take the front out of play. So you have to miss that hole long, and you might hit a shot out of the bunker. And I've spent some time out of that sand. I think I can get it up and down to most of those pins. So hopefully I'll take the water out of play, be either on the back edge of the green or just over and be able to salvage some pars there.”

Well, not exactly.

5. Lee Westwood was four over (par).

“I thought the golf course set up great today,” Westwood said after his round. "I’m quite surprised no one’s gone out this morning and shot a 66.”

6. World No. 1, Luke Donald, was three over (par) at the end of round one.

“Certainly at three over, I’m not out of it,” he said. “Everyone knows that it’s only going to get tougher, and if I can plug away and shoot some good scores coming in, I’m still right there.”

7. Bubba Dickerson, who won the 2001 US Amateur but currently plays on the Nationwide Tour, pulled himself into third place after being at two over (par) after just the first three holes. He finished in 10th spot.

8. Sergio Garcia, who has been MIA for months it seems, inched his way up to three under (par) and then dropped a shot coming in to finish at two under (par). He played with two Spaniards, Miguel Angel Jimenez and Alvaro Quiros.

9. The Golf Boys hung in there. If you missed their video, go to www.bencrane.com or The Golf Channel’s website to see it. Their scores today: Hunter Mahan, three over (par); Ben Crane, seven over (par); Rickie Fowler, three over (par); Bubba Watson, even.

10. Bubba Watson’s pants. The golf pants, not the video bib overalls. They were some kind of green camouflage pattern, perhaps selected in case he hit a wayward shot, because he would blend in to the foliage off the fairway.

11. Davis Love III was under par in the first round of a US Open for first time since 1991.

12. One guy nobody but his parents and golf coach knows is on the leaderboard: 24-year-old Kyung-Tae Kim of Korea who has played in three WGC events.

13. Ryan Palmer’s morning round of two under (par) held up for fourth place after all the afternoon groups played. He had a near miss at the HP Byron Nelson three weeks ago.

“I came out a week ago on Tuesday, just by myself, got in the golf cart and I and hit six tee shots on every hole,” he said about his preparation. “I had a good idea on every line I wanted to take coming into this golf course. This is one of my favorite golf courses to play.”

14. Robert Rock at two under (par), winner of last week’s BMW Italian Open, surprised with a tie for fourth. Rock did not get to DC until 4 p.m. Wednesday because his visa application was delayed due to a misspent youth (see golf.com for full story). He spent $1,000 on cab ride from Newark, NJ to Maryland.

15. The hardest hole on the golf course was not the 18th—that honor went to the par-four 11th  with an average of 4.4615. The 18th was third hardest for the day with a scoring average of  4.3397. Second hardest was the 14th with an average of 4.42.95

NBA Draft 2011: Kenneth Faried and 5 Players Who Will Be Underdrafted

With the NBA Finals finally concluded, our focus shifts to the NBA draft on June 23.

There is a lot of hype surrounding players like Kyrie Irving and Derrick Williams, but all fans know that the draft's most memorable moments are players getting picked too early or too late.

Every year, teams miss out on top talent that slips farther down the board than they should.

Much like the NFL draft, there are players that are often underdrafted and misevaluated that often perform like a top pick.

This year's NBA draft is no exception, and players like Kenneth Faried and Jon Leuer could be underdrafted, despite their amazing talent.

Let's take a look at three other players who will be underdrafted, along with Faried and Leuer, in the 2011 NBA draft.
