Carolina Panthers Draft: Getting Austin in a later round could help Carolina:
It was practically set in stone that North Carolina defensive tackle Marvin Austin would be a first-round pick. Then he got suspended for the 2010 season by the NCAA for receiving improper benefits from NFL agents. He wasn't able to continue progressing and suddenly had a huge red flag associated with him.
Michael Lombardi or NFL Network believes that Austin is still a tremendous prospect and says he's not far behind Marcell Dareus.
Dareus is the player that most scouts and draft experts believe the Carolina Panthers should pick No. 1 overall instead of Cam Newton. If the Panthers could pick up Austin in the second or third round, it would be a heck of a coup.
The Panthers don't have a second-round pick, so?barring a trade?they would have to hope he's still available to them with the first pick of the third round. He's a 300-pounder with a 30.5-inch vertical. Can you say "athletic big man"?
