NFL Draft 2011: Chiefs Need to Keep an Eye on Marcus Cannon

Marcus Cannon's Size and Athleticism is Going to be a 2011 NFL Draft Second-Round Steal

As we discussed earlier in the week it has been an interesting week for the big offensive tackle out of TCU, Marcus Cannon. First there were reports that he had testicular cancer, which then forced him to take a biopsy to prove those reports were false.

So, after all of that craziness we are right back to where we started, and that is with a massive offensive tackle that wildly successful in college and is projected as a second-round pick due to the fact that he is perceived as being a better fit for guard in the NFL.

SidelineScouting.com let's us in on some of the weaknesses that may prohibit him from playing tackle in the NFL:

"Can be a little slow getting into his pass set... Gets to upright in his slide to the outside edge... Slow to recognize delayed blitzes and stunts... Doesn't always get his hands on linebackers in space... Lacks good lateral blocking range... Struggles with speed rushers."

The guy is loaded with potential though, and as NFL.com tells us his biggest weakness is awareness and that is something that good coaching should be able to help him improve upon. NFL.com:

"Cannon is a big boy with sneaky athleticism that could develop into a starting right tackle at the next level. The biggest concern is his inability to consistently recognize blocking assignments and he gets beat far too often on stunts and blitzes. If he can improve his instincts and understanding of the game he could be a force and he will likely be a second day pick."

Cannon's weaknesses will be greatly reduced in the smaller confines that a guard is responsible for, and this is a guy that should be able to make an impact from day one. Fftoolbox.com's Joel Welser:

"Cannon is a big lineman who has enough athleticism to move his feet and stop the more nimble ends. Cannon could sneak into the first round, but he is more likely a second or third round selection at this point. Yet, for a second or third rounder, he is a very polished blocker who has the ability to immediately help any NFL team."

It will be interesting to see how long Cannon lasts on draft boards. I am not convinced he will be there for the Chiefs in the second-round, although it is a possibility. If he is the Chiefs should not hesitate to draft him.

If he can develop into a right tackle it would be ideal. If he is better suited at guard he will be a needed infusion of youth to their aging corp.
