What Teams Will Be Anxious to Trade Up to No. 2 in the 2011 NFL Draft?
Last week we discussed the possibility that the Broncos may be trying to trade down from the No. 2 overall selection. It is a solid strategy as the value of the No. 2 pick would allow the Broncos to attain a pick in the top-ten and acquire an extra second-rounder on top of that.
However, it takes two to tango. Mike Klis of the Denver Post recently speculated on the chances of the Broncos finding a trading partner for the second selection. Klis:
"Ideally, the Broncos trade back to either No. 3 Buffalo, No. 4 Cincinnati, No. 7 San Francisco or No. 8 Tennessee. Those four teams are in the quarterback market. So is Arizona at No. 5 but Cardinals GM Rod Graves almost never trades draft picks, and No. 10 Washington probably doesn't have enough draft-pick ammunition to move up to No. 2."
Klis believes the Broncos ability to trade the No. 2 selection on this draft hinges on one man, Cam Newton. Klis:
"But if Newton goes No. 1, I don't see another team trading into the No. 2 spot for Blaine Gabbert. Maybe Buffalo would move up one spot to make sure no other teams behind them take Gabbert. Doing so, though, would probably cost the Bills their third-round pick, No. 68 overall."
I am not buying Klis reasoning. If Newton does go No. 1 it will make Gabbert even more valuable. Gabbert is rated higher than Newton on many boards, and he and Newton are widely considered the only two quarterbacks worthy of going in the first half of the first-round.
If one of those QBs goes off the board right away the following teams that want a QB are going to be pressured to trade up before the other one goes off the board. For instance Cincinnati may want to jump Buffalo and go from No. 4 to No. 2.
